1. How to Start Creating a Terrazzo Pattern
First, create a new file. Go to File > New and set the Width and Height to 3000 px and the Resolution to 72 px/in.
2. How to Create the Terrazzo Background
In this section, we are going to create a background. Go to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color to create a new solid color fill layer, name it Background Color, and choose the color #fffdf7
.
3. How to Create a Terrazzo Texture
Step 1
In this section, we are going to create a terrazzo texture. Go to Layer > New > Layer to create a new layer and name it Temp.
Step 2
Now set the foreground color to #000000
, go to Edit > Fill, and set the Contents to Foreground Color, Mode to Normal, and Opacity to 100%.
Step 3
Go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise, and set the Amount to 10%, Distribution to Gaussian, and check the Monochromatic option.
Step 4
Now go to Filter > Pixelate > Mezzotint, and set the Type to Coarse Dots.
Step 5
Go to Filter > Pixelate > Crystallize, and set the Cell Size to 100.
Step 6
Now press Control-I on your keyboard to invert the layer colors.
4. How to Create a Terrazzo Brush
Step 1
In this section, we are going to create a brush using the terrazzo texture that we have made. Choose the Laso Tool (L), and select one of the polygonal parts. Then, go to Edit > Define Brush to define this part as a brush, and name it Terrazzo_Brush_1.
Step 2
Repeat this method to create as many different terrazzo brushes as you like. Then, go to File > New to create a new file, and set the Width and Height to 150 px and the Resolution to 72 px/in. In the newly created file, press Control-Shift-N to create a new layer, and hide the Background layer. Next, set the foreground color to #000000
, choose the Brush Tool (B), pick the first terrazzo brush, and brush on the center of the canvas.
5. How to Create a Terrazzo Pattern in Photoshop
Step 1
Go to Edit > Define Pattern to define this part as a pattern, and name it Terrazzo_Pattern_1.
Step 2
Repeat this method for the remaining terrazzo brushes. Then, close this file and return to the original file. Right-click on the Temp layer, and choose Delete Layer. Next, go to Layer > New > Layer to create a new layer, and name it Terrazzo_Parts_1.
Step 3
Now go to Edit > Fill, set the Contents to Pattern, set the Custom Pattern to some of the terrazzo patterns that we have previously made, check the Script option, and set it to Random Fill. Leave the Mode at Normal and set the Opacity to 100% as a default. Then, choose OK, and in the popup window, use the settings below. Feel free to experiment with different settings here, as well as repeating the step to add more parts.
Step 4
Go to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color to create a new solid color fill layer, name it TP_1_Color, and choose the color #e8b49e
. Then, press Control-Alt-G on your keyboard to create a clipping mask.
Step 5
Repeat this method to create as many layers as you like. Feel free to use different terrazzo patterns and random fill script and color settings each time. Here is my result:
6. How to Define a Terrazzo Photoshop Pattern
Now let’s define our final design as a pattern. To do so, go to Edit > Define Pattern, and name it Terrazzo Pattern.
